Language Arts
Grammar focused on sentence structure is ongoing. Also, the novel Dear Mr. Henshaw continues to capture our attention in many ways! We find a lot of ways to connect our our own experiences to this story, and the book provides a variety of stimulating topics to write about.
On the spelling front, our root word study continues. These Latin and Greek roots are the basis for meaning in a huge number of English words. Some of the words we're studying are very tough to spell and understand, so we have been working on definitions and word use in class, as well as sorting these words to increase our recognition of roots. We're also completing definition worksheets on Wednesdays for additional support. We recommend keeping a good dictionary handy during the coming weeks! Please note that we have adjusted the total amount of words to 14 at this point.
Math
In 4th grade math, we're actually going to be completing our fraction work this week. Students are expected to know how to compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, identify and write mixed numbers and improper fractions, and how to determine the fraction of a whole group. We'll have a test on WEDNESDAY to see how effective our learning and instruction have been.
In 5th grade math, we are finishing the first half of our graphing unit this week and students will be tested on the concepts we have covered. Students will be working on reading, plotting, and interpreting points on a coordinate grid next. They will then learn how to graph functions using algebraic equations.
Social Studies
Last week, students took their Explorer test and were given the expectations for creating their Keynote presentation and research essay. There is no due date set for these projects yet. Last week, students also were introduced to the states of the Southeast. There will be a geography quiz on Friday of this week.
Science
In our Living Systems unit, we're wrapping up Investigation 3, which focuses on food production in plants and cellular respiration. This is the last of the three Living Systems investigations. We'll prepare to test our understanding of these concepts with another I-Check when we return from the break. We'll also be doing some very thorough reading and response to the activities in class before we take our break.
